Blizzard of 2018: How to avoid Injury while Shoveling

Back Injuries from strenuous lifting are common complaints from our patients. Whether moving equipment, exercising or shoveling snow, back injuries may be avoided with precaution. If you have to shovel snow, here are some basic tips to avoid injury:

1. Bend your knees in squatting position

2. Scoop the snow into the shovel and lift from the bending position as you straighten up

3. Lightly toss the snow ensuring that your back and shoulders remain parallel

Avoid sharply rotating your shoulders or hips when tossing the snow.
